South Africa faces a critical challenge – too few learners are pursuing and excelling in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Without urgent action, the skills gap will continue to widen, limiting both personal opportunities and national growth. This is where STEM support programs play a vital role.
FutureSA Foundation has designed initiatives that strengthen mathematics and science learning, while also building confidence and life skills. Our recent winter school camps, particularly the KwaZulu-Natal Accelerated STEM Programme, showed what can be achieved when learners are given the right support.
South Africa’s STEM Education Crisis
The statistics are sobering. In the 2024 National Senior Certificate exams, less than 40% of learners achieved a pass mark of 50% or higher in Mathematics. Physical Sciences showed similar results. Yet the demand for STEM skills is growing rapidly, with careers in engineering, data science, information technology and healthcare topping national shortage lists.
The problem is not a lack of interest from learners but rather limited access to quality teaching, resources, and mentoring. Rural and township schools are hardest hit, with overcrowded classrooms and under-equipped labs. Without targeted interventions, thousands of talented learners are left behind.
FutureSA Foundation’s Approach
Our STEM support programs combine academic strengthening with personal development. We know that success in Mathematics and Physical Sciences is not just about textbooks. Learners need a safe space, skilled facilitators, mentorship, and consistent encouragement.
The Accelerated STEM Programme in KwaZulu-Natal, hosted in July 2025, provided an example of this model in action. Over four days, Grade 12 learners immersed themselves in intensive subject sessions led by district subject advisors and expert teachers.
- Mathematics: Learners worked through past exam papers with guidance from senior specialists, focusing on problem-solving and exam strategy.
- Physical Sciences: Sessions combined theory with group exercises, ensuring learners could engage with difficult concepts.
- English: Support in writing, comprehension and analysis helped learners improve across all subjects.
This blended approach meant learners left the camp not only with stronger content knowledge but also with practical study methods they could continue at home.
Beyond the Textbook
Academic sessions were supported by leadership development, career guidance and wellness workshops. Learners attended talks on time management, teamwork, and substance abuse awareness. Morning mindfulness, team-building exercises, and evening campfire discussions created a balanced environment for growth.
Career guidance was particularly impactful. Representatives from Sefako Makgatho University shared study opportunities and inspired learners with video testimonials from students who had come from similar backgrounds. Seeing those success stories made learners believe that a future in STEM is possible.
One learner reflected:
“I always thought Maths was too difficult for me. At camp, I realised I just needed better tools and guidance.”
The Impact of STEM Support Programs
Feedback collected at the KZN camp revealed measurable changes:
- Learners showed increased confidence in tackling exam questions.
- Many reported new study habits, including group discussions and peer teaching.
- Tutors observed higher levels of participation and problem-solving during sessions.
Most importantly, learners left with a renewed belief in their own potential. By combining academic support with life skills, our STEM support programs empower learners to succeed in school and beyond.
